The Cincinnati Bengals simply can’t escape former quarterback Andy Dalton.
Barring any dramatic events over the next week, Bengals will meet Dalton as the Carolina Panthers’ starting quarterback after that team’s shock announcement that it was benching former first-round pick Bryce Young.
That means the Bengals will see Dalton for the fourth time in five years:
-
In 2020, they lost to his Dallas Cowboys, 30-7, while he threw two touchdowns.
-
In 2021, they lost to Dalton’s Chicago Bears, 20-17, while he threw just one score.
-
In 2022, they beat his New Orleans Saints 30-26 despite his touchdown pass.
Dalton’s propensity for appearing at the wrong times for his former team is a bit odd, especially considering he plays in the NFC and not the AFC.
And Week 4 is another bad stretch for the Bengals — they started the season 0-2 and face the Commanders in Week 3 before playing Dalton. A drop to 1-3 or even 0-4 if Dalton still has revenge to take could very well end the season.
The good news? The Bengals fared much better against the Chiefs in Week 2. Dalton or not, Joe Burrow and co. will just have to keep that trend going and not get left behind, and the former quarterback’s presence could be just a footnote in the turnaround.
