The Dallas Cowboys are looking to capitalize on another team that has too many talented running backs.
That team happens to be the Chicago Bears, who recently eliminated Khalil Herbert from their offense in favor of a one-two punch of D’Andre Swift and Roschon Johnson.
Chicago’s new game plan without Herbert has yielded wins, but that doesn’t mean Herbert can’t easily benefit another football team this season.
ESPN’s Bill Barnwell recently predicted that the Cowboys will trade for Herbert before the November 5 deadline. Barnwell believes the Bears would accept a 2025 sixth-round pick from Dallas in exchange for Herbert.
“Ezekiel Elliot has largely been eliminated from the rotation, leaving Rico Dowdle, who generated minus 18 rushing yards above expectations (RYOE) during a relatively quiet start to the season,” Barnwell said .
“There’s no Derrick Henry lurking as an immediately impactful fullback, but how about adding another pair of fresh legs to compete with Dowdle? Herbert probably isn’t the type to carry a 20-carry-per-game workload, but among the 46 players with 300 or more carries between 2021 and 2023, his 4.9 yards per carry average ranks seventh.
Erik Lambert of Sports Mockery also believes that a Herbert-Dallas deal makes a lot of sense from Chicago’s perspective, as Lambert communicated in a new report.
“(Herbert) might not save their whole operation there, but he at least gives them some proven legs with a lot of juice,” Lambert said. “Getting a 6th round pick back for him would essentially mean victory for the Bears because they spent a 6th round to select him in 2021.”
“The reality is that Khalil Herbert is not a good candidate for this new attack. Shane Waldron prefers to run more inside the zone. Herbert is at his best in outside zone concepts. If Dallas presents an offer, the Poles should think about it.”
