THE Denver Broncos managed six field goals against the New Orleans Saints last week, but only two offensive touchdowns.
After the game, rookie quarterback Bo Nix said: “we need to turn some of those field goals into touchdowns. »
Completing drives in the end zone is an area where Denver’s offense can improve. Nix also has a lot of room to improve, and he knows it.
“I think of [plays] that I could have gotten back,” Nix said after a 33-10 win over the Saints. “I think it’s just the competitive nature of the guys. You want to give Give yourself a little grace sometimes. They [the defense] are obviously trying to stop you from doing all the good things. You live, you learn and you continue to work.
“No one has ever played a perfect game game, that’s why we’re all still here trying to figure it out and keep moving forward. Obviously, the most important thing is to win the game. When you beat a team like that with really good players with such a margin, it’s really good. It’s good to see all the guys playing and playing withell.”
One area in particular where Nix could improve is his footwork. The rookie sometimes breaks the pocket when his protection holds up, and worse, he sometimes throws with unstable feet when he has time to settle in before making a throw.
Broncos Coach Sean Payton was asked about training Nix’s footwork during his Zoom conference call with reporters Monday.
“I think you have to be careful not to over-coach,” Payton said. “There are some things he does really well coming out of the pocket or climbing into the pocket. I think we start by focusing on route timing, route depth in the barrel or under the center, [is it a] three, five or seven [-step drop back]? We work on the rhythm of the game so that his feet follow the depth of the course.
“The times when he climbs in the pocket or moves in the pocket, we’re pretty smart about what we saw or what we’re trying to fix.”
Nix has made progress since Week 1. Now he needs to show consistency. This week, Nix will face a Carolina Panthers defense that ranks second in yards allowed (385.7), seventh in passing yards allowed (223.6) and last in points allowed (34.7) per game. Nix will have a good opportunity to take another step forward in his development on Sunday.
