The Washington Commanders have had a great 2024 campaign, as the team is 5-2 and atop the NFC East. Dan Quinn’s team has been one of the biggest surprises of the season so far, as the offense has been electric and the defense has been steadily improving.
Although the Commanders have one of the best rosters in the NFC, there are still some glaring weaknesses, most notably at cornerback. Joe Whitt’s defense lacks a true CB1, and the position group hasn’t seen much improvement from young players like Emmanuel Forbes and Benjamin St-Juste.
While Washington is eager to bolster a weak secondary, ESPN’s Seth Walder believes a reunion with Miami Dolphins cornerback Kendall Fuller could be a potential trade option for the Commanders.
What do you think of a second meeting with Fuller for Washington? Commanders need help at the corner; they rank 31st in the NFL in defensive open scoring against wide receivers (via ESPN Receiver Ratings). Benjamin St-Juste gave up 2.0 yards per coverage snap — the fifth-most of any corner with at least 100 coverage snaps this season, according to NFL Next Gen Stats. With Daniels in charge, Washington has no time to waste. He has a chance to make a real playoff run, and having a more acceptable defense would really help. Fuller would help stabilize Washington’s weak position.
While Fuller isn’t the most exciting player, the former third-round pick is experienced and will provide much-needed leadership at the back end of the defense. Fuller has only missed three games over the past three seasons and has been a consistent starter since 2018.
The former commander spent four seasons in Washington and had impressive campaigns with the team before that. departure for Miami in free agency in March.
Despite playing on a mediocre Dolphins team, Fuller is poised to have one of the best years of his career. The 29-year-old has only allowed a 50% completion rate and a 76.5 passer rating when targeted through six games in 2024.
Acquiring the former Virginia Tech star shouldn’t be a problem for general manager Adam Peters, as the Commanders have draft capital for 2025 and Fuller’s contract is relatively cheap. A Day 3 pick should be enough to bring the veteran back to the nation’s capital.
There are more interesting choices on the market, but Kendall Fuller’s leadership and knowledge of the team would be a great asset to a young Commanders team. Additionally, the 2019 Super Bowl champion is still a solid defensive back who would immediately become Washington’s primary corner.
