Even if the decision to start Pittsburgh Steelers Quarterback Russell Wilson versus Justin Fields in last week’s game was polarizing to say the least, head coach Mike Tomlin seemed to make the right call. No specific rhyme or reason was given for the decision, other than Tomlin’s desire to “win championships.”
This confused former players, analysts and fans, especially since Fields had led the Steelers to an impressive 4-2 record in six games. However, offensive coordinator Arthur Smith explained why the decision to replace Wilson with Fields was simpler than people made it out to be.
It appears that Wilson’s talent for throwing his pristine deep ball, as displayed throughout the Week 7 contest, was one of the main reasons he got the opportunity to show his signal in 2024. This “greed” on the offensive side of the ball is much appreciated, because while Fields’ athleticism is impressive, the passing game as a whole has become an area of concern in recent years for the Steelers from Pittsburgh.
