THE Houston Texans are preparing to do without Stefon Diggs this Thursday night against the New York Jets. With a short week, it was expected.
As Tuesday’s presentation begins, Diggs’ status for the remainder of the regular season remains a mystery.
Texans Coach DeMeco Ryans didn’t do much when asked about Diggs’ status, saying the team is “still evaluating to see where he’s at.”
The four-time Pro Bowl receiver suffered a non-contact knee injury late in the third quarter of Sunday’s 23-21 win over the Indianapolis Colts and did not return. While he was able to leave the field under his own power, he remained on the turf for several minutes while he was examined by the Texans medical staff.
Even though Houston did not practice Monday, it released an injury report indicating Diggs did not practice. Tuesday is more of a walkthrough than an actual practice, but the Texans won’t have to rule anyone out until Wednesday’s injury report.
According to the Houston Chronicle, Diggs was scheduled to have an MRI on Monday to determine the severity of the injury. While some think it could be an LCL injury, others could be an MCL sprain or a mild LCL tear.
Several members of the medical staff at X, formerly known as Twitter, suspect it is an ACL injury, but the MRI should give the best indication.
With Nico Collins sidelined with a hamstring injury, Diggs has emerged as the new No. 1 threat. Through eight games, the All-Pro target leads the Texans with 47 receptions, ranks second in receiving yards with 492 and is tied for first in receiving touchdowns with three.
Before leaving, Diggs was on pace to record his first 100-yard outing of the season. He finished with five catches for 81 yards, including a season-ending 49-yard reception in the third quarter.
“Prayers go out to Stef. God makes no mistakes. I hope he’s okay,” Texans Pro Bowl quarterback CJ Stroud said. “I don’t know what’s going on yet. I’m praying and hoping he starts to feel better… It’s not easy to see him fall.”
While the Texans love Collins and Diggs, it’s not like they don’t have quality options who can step up. Dalton Schultz remains a steady option at tight end and finished with 52 yards on four catches.
Sophomore receiver Tank Dell hasn’t found his rhythm yet, but he caught a 7-yard touchdown pass just before halftime.
John Metchie III replaced Diggs and had three catches for 29 yards, including a critical 28-yard catch in the third quarter.
Xavier Hutchinson and Robert Woods are also talented enough to take over matches as option #3. Both caught passes of more than 12 yards in Sunday’s win and collected first downs.
“They have to make a big effort for us in the next few days,” Stroud said.
The New York Jets could create problems in the passing game for Stroud. Despite a 2-6 record, New York ranks second in passing yards per game with 161.1.
Kickoff from MetLife Stadium is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
