The Carolina Panthers are officially so bad that losing to them could get you fired. Dennis Allen learned that the hard way Monday, when New Orleans The Saints fired him after a 23-22 loss at Bank of America Stadium, his team’s seventh straight loss.
Before this losing streak began, Allen had an 18-18 record as head coach of the Saints. Fortunes change quickly in the NFL, and no matter how much a coach may have accomplished in the past, he is never more than a long losing streak away from losing his job. Maybe that’s why the Panthers rookie head coach Dave Canales can show empathy. Asked yesterday about Allen’s firing, Canales told reporters his heart goes out to him.

This is an elegant thing from Canales. One would hope he could be just as gracious to Carolina’s former number one overall draft pick, Bryce Young, who is coming off the first winning game of his career. Canales still hasn’t named a starter for this week’s game against the Giants in Germany and that says a lot about how he feels about Young. But whatever…
As of now, the Panthers are technically ahead of the Saints in the NFC South race, but both teams are 2-7 and they are tied with five other teams for this record, which is the worst mark in the league.
