The running game was essential to the Kansas City Chiefs‘ success this season, especially after the addition of running back Kareem Hunt. Following his game-winning performance in Week 9 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Patrick Mahomes praised the veteran running back during his postgame press conference on Monday.
“It’s been fun. It was fun to watch, man. I mean, he (Kareem Hunt) has been in the building – ever since he’s been here – and he takes care of it every day. Mahomes said. “He works his tail off; he’s preparing for the moment, and every time we get there, like (in) the fourth quarter, and (at) the end of games, he’s going to make these runs. Five to six meters (or) seven meters, whatever, and he’ll finish. When you play that hard the whole game, it takes a toll on the defense. I think the guys are proud of the way he’s playing and the way he’s running his business this year.
Hunt finished the game with 27 carries for 106 yards and the final score in overtime. Rain and pressure have not affected the 29-year-old in his second tenure with the franchise.
“He (Kareem Hunt) wants football. I think that’s the most important thing. As the game goes on, it’s like he starts to feel it and he starts to move forward,” Mahomes said. “There are certain situations where I can have outside throws, and I’m like, ‘Man, I’m going to give the ball to this guy and let him go,’ because when he runs – even if he’s six o’clock -yard (or) five yards, they wreak havoc on the defense.
Hunt remains the starter while Isiah Pacheco recovers from his broken fibula, but Mahomes believes the two running backs will work well together.
