There have been many complaints amid the offensive struggles for the Chicago Bearleaving a bitter taste in the mouths of many. Due to the offense’s woes, there have been calls for offensive coordinator Shane Waldron to be fired or for there to be a change in play-caller.
Despite all the criticism currently surrounding Waldron and the team, rookie receiver Rome Odunze supports the work of his offensive coordinator. Following the loss to the Arizona Cardinals in Week 9, Odunze was asked about the play calling and Waldron’s role, to which he offered a supportive response.
“I think Shane is doing a great job,” Odunze said via Renowned Bear. “I think he’s constantly working hard to put us in the right positions.”
Getting support from the players on his side of the ball should be a big vote of confidence for Waldron, but it’s hard not to overlook the struggles they’ve endured as a whole. Through his first eight career games, rookie quarterback Caleb Williams has thrown for less than 200 yards four times. Having only half of his games where he eclipsed 200 yards in a game, Williams has also thrown nine touchdowns and five interceptions this year.
However, it’s not all about the passing game, as the running game has also been a struggle. Entering Week 9 of the NFL season, the Bears currently rank 29th in passing offense (182.9 yards per game), 23rd in rushing offense (111.8 ypg), which places them 28th in total offense (294.6 ypg).
