Amid all their offensive difficulties, the Chicago Bear have a true superstar in their defensive secondary, the returning Jaylon Johnson. After a brand new extension he signed last offseason that ties him to the Bears through the 2028 season, Johnson hasn’t missed a beat following his big contract.
Even though the Bears’ secondary suffered injuries due to injuries to safety Jaquan Brisker, who missed a month due to a concussion, and cornerback Kyler Gordon, who missed time due to hamstring injury, Johnson didn’t miss a beat. In addition to injuries, Johnson had to deal with his opposite teammate, Tyrique Stevenson, and the mental breakdown he suffered against the Washington Commanders.
After the team’s first eight games, Johnson has been a monster in all areas of his game, and he particularly excels in man coverage. Not allowing opponents to get open and not giving up any success when tested in man coverage, Johnson is currently ranked first in the entire NFL with the lowest passer rating allowed in man coverage, according to Pro Football Focus.
The Bears’ defense has been their biggest bright spot during a roller coaster season. With Johnson leading the way for one of the best secondaries in the league, it’s no surprise that he’s not only atop the team’s defensive rating, but the entire NFL for his superior play in terms of male coverage.
