The Pittsburgh Steelers suffered a crushing 24-19 road loss to the Cleveland Browns on Thursday Night Football in Week 12 as Mike Tomlin’s team was unable to make timely plays and now 8-3 this year. Pittsburgh will look to get back on track next Sunday, as the team travels to Paycor Stadium to take on the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 13.
Although the Steelers’ loss to the dysfunctional Browns was uninspiring, Pittsburgh has had a successful 2024 season thus far, mainly due to improved quarterback play.
Russell Wilson has provided consistent play since taking over as the starter in Week 7, and Justin Fields has done an admirable job filling in for Wilson when the veteran was dealing with a calf injuryposting a 4-2 record.
Wilson and Fields will be unrestricted free agents this offseason, and according to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazettethe franchise is expected to re-sign Wilson to a new contract in 2025.
With the nine-time Pro Bowler likely returning as a starter in 2025, Fields’ future in Pittsburgh is extremely fragile after this season, as he will likely look for an opportunity to start. This also means the Steelers could be in the market for backup quarterbacks.
If Fields is not back with the team in 2025, Jordan Dajani of CBS Sports thinks Pittsburgh is a potential landing spot for recently benched players New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones.
The Steelers completely revamped their quarterback room last offseason with the additions of Russell Wilson and Fields, and we could be looking at some other big changes this offseason. Both quarterbacks are on expiring contracts, and with the current situation, Fields could be playing elsewhere in 2025. Looking at the Steelers’ history of taking flyers on players like Fields and Mitch Trubisky, Jones could be an option as a backup quarterback. .
Jones has been disappointing in 2024, throwing eight touchdowns against seven interceptions and failing to live up to his lucrative contract. With New York benching him for Tommy DeVito and having a reasonable deal on his contract this offseason, the 2019 No. 6 overall pick likely won’t wear a Giants uniform next season.
Although Jones is a low-level starter, the 27-year-old would be an intriguing backup in Pittsburgh. Offensive coordinator Arthur Smith had success with Wilson and Fields during the 2024 campaign and also coached Ryan Tannehill during his best years as a professional with the Tennessee Titans.
Signing Jones to a cheap contract to learn behind Wilson and serve as a backup would be a smart move by general manager Omar Khan.
