Some years, the real intrigue on the way in which the rest of the first round of the NFL draft could develop only occurs at least the third or the fourth choice.
This year, however, he will start with the Cleveland Browns, which have the second overall selection. He has marked the first time since 2021 that the Browns have a selection in the first round after the disastrous trade of Deshaun Watson in 2022 sent three first round choices to Houston.
The Browns could go to one of the three directions with their choice. They could try to address the quarter position – a place where the franchise has not been able to regularly obtain since its return in 1999 – with Sheder Sanders from Colorado.
Cleveland could also take his Sanders teammate, Travis Hunter, using his double -meaning talent as a large receiver and defensive back.
Or, the Browns could select Abdul Carter de Penn State and associate it with Myles Garrett to form a formidable pass raix duo.
“We have not made a difficult decision with regard to the way we will use the choice No. 2,” said Managing Director Andrew Berry at his press conference before the bearing. “There are a number of guys we love. Our trips are the logical contact points you would make for all the prospects that deserve to be considered high in the project.”
The owner Jimmy Haslam also made the headlines during the League meetings when he said that the editorial staff of a quarter-Arrière, in particular with the second choice, should not be the final scenario of his team.
“I think the message is that if the right person is there, we will take it,” said Haslam. “Otherwise, we will discover it for a year or two until we get the right person. There are good football players in this project and we must make sure that we get the right ones for us.”
QB room statement
With Watson, probably sidelined for the season with an Achilles tendon twice, the Browns signed Joe Flacco for a one -year contract on April 11. They acquired Kenny Pickett from Philadelphia on March 12.
Sanders’ editorial staff would create a lot of buzz. The son of the renowned temple Daion Sanders is not lacking either, saying during his professional day in Colorado “wherever I go, it will certainly be an improvement that it was before my arrival.”
If the Browns passed on Sanders, they could return late in the first round because they have the 33rd choice in total, which opens the second day on Friday. Ole Miss’ Jaxson Dart, Jalen Milroe de l’Alabama, Will Howard de l’Ohio and Riley Leonard de Notre-Dame should take place in the second or third round on Friday.
Berry said the signing of Flacco would not play a factor in their decisions project.
“We firmly believe that it is not a question of choosing a player who is ready to contribute now, it is a question of trying to find the player who, in your opinion, will be the best if you have access to this player,” he said. “The quarters ripen and grow at their own pace and our thought is not in terms of immediacy but to make the next long -term bet.”
Pose
Hunter would be the fourth winner of the Heisman trophy drafted by the Browns, joining Charles White, Johnny Manziel and Baker Mayfield.
Berry said during the screening combination in February that he had seen Hunter mainly as a receiver, but he has changed his position since then. Berry told journalists during the League meetings that he sees Hunter playing both the receiver and the cornerback, but that the balance depends on the plans of the attack and the defense and the physical assessment.
Hunter not only won the Heisman last year, but he won the Biletnikoff prize as the best receiver in the country and Bednarik Prix as the best defensive player.
Berry described Hunter as a unicorn several times, but also compared it to the Baseball Superstar Shohei Ohtani in what he excels in everything he plays.
Align them
Since Berry became director general of the Browns in 2020, eight of his 21 selections in the first four laps have been on defensive lines. According to Sportradar, the eight choices are tied with raiders and Bengals for most of the league during this period.
With Myles Garrett under contract throughout the 2029 season, associating him with Carter could create a duo of first passes. During his first season as a full -time rusher full -time last year in Penn State, Carter had 12 bags, sixth in the football subdivision Bowl.
Carter would also be used for the rigors of a long schedule. Penn State was one of the four teams to play 16 games last season during the first year of the university football playoffs.
Need
In addition to the quarter, the defensive line and the wide receiver, Cleveland must contact the ball carrier. Nick Chubb remains a free agent because the ground match was on average 94.6 yards per game last season, the fourth less in the league. He must also tackle depth on the offensive line.
No need
David Njoku is back for one more season, leaving the Browns at the end, at least for the short term.
