Of the 257 total choices at the coming NFL 2025 draft35 of them are compensatory choices.
But What is a compensatory choice? Why did the teams reward them and what teams have (or more) such selections?
This year, 16 teams won at least a compensatory draft choice. Some teams have won choices for losing more quality free agents than they signed last year. The NFL has also allocated special choices to three teams that have lost minority coaches and front office staff to other organizations.

2025 NFL Draft compensatory choices by team
Here is the number of compensatory choices that each team has been awarded for this year’s project:

What is a compensatory choice?
With the seven choices, among which each team begins in a project of a given year, the NFL also grants at least 32 “compensatory” choices additional to various teams. These additional choices are positioned at the ends of the 3-7 towers.

Compensatory choices are allocated to teams which “have lost more or better compensatory agents than they signed the previous year”, according to an article in the NFL.com. “The formula that determines the compensatory free agents is based on salary, playing time and honors in playoffs.”
The teams can also win additional compensatory choices if a coach or a minority executive that they hired to share to take a head coach or a “primary football management position” with another team.
This year, 16 teams won at least one compensatory choice. Three of them – RAMS, Lions and 49ers – have obtained special choices for losing minority coaches to other teams.
