Each NFL team loves their recruits the day they are selected.
No one goes to a group of journalists after a day of work in April and says: “Boy, it did not go in our direction.”
Even given the pink benchmark that each player obtains at the start of his career, the director general of the Broncos, George Paton and coach Sean Payton, seemed particularly happy on Friday evening that they were able to win the LSU Sai’vion Jones defensive player at the end of the third round.
“It corresponds to our defensive line mold,” said Paton after designing an exchange until n ° 101 in total, noting the size, strength, versatility of Jones and the increasing arsenal. “I think what comes out with him is how hard he plays. The engine – it is 110 miles per hour at each game. It therefore integrates into our group. ”
Payton said the Broncos did not only think that he would have left by their first choice on Saturday (n ° 111 in total), but they were surprised that he lasted as long as he did.
“George and I felt, 14 choices earlier, he was going to be difficult to get,” said Payton. “We just had the impression that this player was going to get out of the painting. Fortunately for us, he was still there.”
If Jones continues to have a productive career in the NFL, the broncos will have this business – but also two others which preceded it – to thank.
If Paton and Payton did not return twice earlier Friday, they would not have had the capital to convince Philadelphia to exchange them n ° 101.
These are just some of the mobile parts of a wild draft weekend on the commercial front against the Broncos.
They started with seven choices and finished with seven, but it was roughly the only symmetry. Denver swung four professions – three back and one – involving a total of 20 choices. At one point or another, they held 17 different slots out of 257 in total.
From their original set, the only choice that Denver was used was n ° 20 on the Texas Jahdae Barron corner. The Broncos actually planned to negotiate themselves from there also, said Thursday evening to take a ball carrier (Treveyon Henderson de l’Ohio State, sources said) later in the first round.
Instead, they fortunately caught Barron, but then had to wait for a robust start to the second round in which the attractive competence players came out of the board.
The Broncos knew that they should be very lucky for Henderson, his colleague Osuten Judkins or the LSU winger Tight Mason Taylor to arrive at No. 51. Indeed, the three and others were disappeared by n ° 42.
Payton and Paton, however, fell in love with the UCF RJ Harvey ball carrier.
While their choice at n ° 51 approached, they dimensioned the teams behind them – Tennessee, Tampa Bay, Green Bay, Les Charters and Buffalo – and saw no one who desperately needed a ball carrier.
They had spoken of an exchange with Carolina, four choices by side to make the mathematics work and execute it.
“The framework occurs before in many of these trades, in particular with Caroline,” said Paton.
Then, Detroit wanted to go from n ° 60 to n ° 57, one jump on two other teams with great runners in Houston and Baltimore.
Denver thought he could get back while getting Harvey. Well, probably.
“The risk that you run is not necessarily with the intermediate teams, it is the potential team that can (discuss the gap),” said Payton. “It has certainly borne fruit.”
The final result of these professions slipped Denver in the third round (from n ° 85 to 74) and the fourth (from n ° 122 to n ° 111) and transformed a sixth (n ° 208) into fourth (n ° 130). Then, the Broncos used Nos 111, 130 and a sixth round to go to n ° 101 for Jones, plus n ° 134, which became the rusher of Alabama Edge than Robinson.
According to the Jimmy Johnson trade value table, a method of several to determine the value of project choices, the broncos came out forward on their first two commercial backs (plus-10.2 points and more-12, respectively), which is to be expected.
Trade against Jones ended up may be their best job.
They went out slightly in advance (more-6.4 points) on the movement for the promising 21-year-old, who had 7.5 plated for the loss and 4.5 bags for tigers last fall. Usually the teams pay at least a small bonus to reassemble the board of directors.
The first three trades of Denver enabled 28.6 points combined. It is the equivalent of n ° 157 in total, a choice of mid-round round.
More practically: without the pair of fourth rounds acquired in shops, they probably do not get Jones. Then they also obtained good value for money.
Denver’s final move was to retreat from n ° 197 in total in exchange for numbers 216 and 241. It was the only trade that sacrificed Denver (less-6.6 points). The end goal was clear: two darts rather than one.
The Broncos obtained the bettor Jeremy Crawshaw at n ° 216 and were then able to secure Caleb Lohner, end of lottery, at No. 241, rather than competing for him in the Rush Agency Free Agency Post-Draft.
Overall, the Broncos made the best player available on a 1 turn, then used the way the table stacked day 2 to extract a little additional juice from their positioning, create a value and land three players that they wanted day 2 rather than two.
It is of course if it pays off.
