Indianapolis (Wish) – To celebrate the 70th anniversary of Wish -TV, we highlight the passage from the Baltimore Colt to Indianapolis in 1984.
On March 29, 1984, Indianapolis woke up to see that they were drawing a team from the Blue NFL.
For years, the owner of Baltimore Colts, Robert Irsay, planned to leave Baltimore in a place that had a modern sports stadium, large enough to house the colts.
Enter: the Hoosier Dome.
The state of Maryland was about to make a decision that would change the colts forever – two words: an eminent area.
The team was worried that the state took it and did not allow the owner of the Jim Irsay colts to move the team.
“I was disturbed because they negotiated with me and they pulled one of these tips,” Irsay said in an interview. “So I said that a tour in deserves another. So we played a little tour of them and we did our luggage and left. ”
On March 28, 1984, a gréil of moving vans moved away from the colts offices, the destination uncertain until the next day.
The now famous Mayflower trucks have won different tracks so as not to be caught by Maryland State police. The trucks were loaded with helmets, crampons, jerseys and all that the team used. Nothing was left behind.
TV-TV photographer Jim Hester was responsible for visiting Indianapolis airport and seeing if something related to the colts could be found. Wish-Tv’s anchoir David Barras was joining him.
“And we look at because we really have no idea who is in the jet or what this jet is,” said Barras, “we have no idea if it has something to do with the colts. And this guy just leaves the plane and I said:” Hey, are you with the colts? “And he said:” Yeah, I am the lawyer. “”
When Barras asked if the colts moved to Indianapolis, the lawyer confirmed that they were. Not only that, the colts were already on the way!
David Barras and Jim Hester rushed to a phone. They could not risk being heard on a two -way radio.
The next stop? The office of mayor Hudnut, where he then officially announced that the colts were coming.
After a few tips and a fleet of trucks, all of a sudden, Indo-Place had turned into a sports destination.
