The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterrier position is a work in progress, and coach Mike Tomlin said that the signing of Aaron Rodgers, the most eminent free agent in a thin market, is only a possible option.
The Steelers met Rodgers, 41, a most useful player in the NFL on March 21, for six hours. Tomlin met the media for the first time since then, on Sunday, at the NFL annual meeting in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Tomlin called him “a very good day” spent with a player he has known for some time. Regarding the calendar, however, the coach said that there was no deadline for Rodgers to conclude an agreement with the Steelers from the team’s point of view.
“I really wanted to spend more of our time knowing him better, and things he appreciates as a player and man, and what he could look for with his next stop,” said Tomlin. “I do not know that we approached it from the point of view of the deadline. Admittedly, as I mentioned, you would like to have adjusted circumstances, but the deadlines can often bring this to the head. ”
Tomlin described the free agency a process, which led Pittsburgh to bring back the former Steelers Qb Mason Rudolph, who played last season with Tennessee, and another veteran, the former Miami Dolphin Skylar Thompson.
The Steelers quarter-Arrière room in 2024 emptied because Russell Wilson and Justin Fields were on one-year chords while sharing, and Kyle Allen was a reserve. Wilson signed with the Giants of New York and Fields went to the old team of Rodgers, the New York Jets. Allen signed as a free agent with the Lions of Detroit. The high turnover in a QB position lasted two seasons.
“Often, I say” two is a model “. It is a snapshot that I use in coaching, but I don’t know that I am alarmed by this with regard to this discussion, “said Tomlin. “We are just trying to constitute the best team we can assemble for 2025. Last year, we had a group in this room which was on offers of one year, and therefore the possibility of what we are doing at the moment was a real thing. But this is just an isolated scenario. If we have similar conversations next year at that time, it’s probably more a discussion for us. ”
Tomlin does not spend silence on the addition of Rudolph, 29, as a potential starter, because he was signed for a two -year contract.
“We are optimistic about the room we are building. Obviously, we are delighted to recover Mason Rudolph,” said Tomlin. “But we will certainly continue to explore all of our options in terms of arrondissement of this piece.”
This includes adding another free agent or selecting a QB in the project. Rodgers, who was released by the jets on March 12 and did not say if he wanted to continue playing, has the advantage decided to experience.
He passed for 3,897 yards and 28 affected in 2024, returning from an Achilles injury at the end of the season suffered in his first match with the jets in September 2023.
The selection of 10 times Pro Bowl ranks fifth in the history of the League in Touché (503) and seventh in passing (62,952).
“We always assess the acquisition of a guy in this position, whether it is a free agency and / or the project, and we therefore make our reasonable diligence, communicating with certain free agents, also preparing for the project,” said Tomlin. “(GM) Omar (Khan) and I have just released in a beautiful tour here last week when we were at Notre Dame, Ohio State and Texas, for example, our last three trips. I think these three institutions have quarters that are eligible for the project, and therefore it was a good process for us. ”
