Kansas City, MO. (AP) – The dominant feeling and not completely inaccurate after the Kansas City chiefs failed in their attempt by three peat from the historic Super Bowl, they could not protect Patrick Mahomes from the relentless rush of the Philadelphia pass.
Often neglected was the fact that their own rush towards the pass barely placed their finger on the quarter of the Eagles Jalen Hurts.
While the chiefs are preparing for the draft of the NFL later this month, and most of the simulated projects have the director general of Kansas City, Brett Veach, spending one of his four selections during the first three laps of the offensive help, he could also likely walk in an attempt to win someone who can play alongside Chris Jones in the middle of the defensive line.
“Each off -season is an offensive line and a defensive line,” said Veach. “If you look at how we have managed the off -season, we are still investing in the offensive line and the defensive line. It’s only a few years, you have more figures with which to work with, and it would probably be a similar challenge this year. Our priority is still first. ”
One of the reasons for which they have a certain flexibility to approach the defensive line first is that the chiefs have already signed the offensive platform Jaylon Moore to an agreement of $ 30 million over two years in the free agency. He was largely a safeguard during his career in San Francisco, but the chiefs saw something they loved in Moore when he had the opportunity to start five games last season.
Their only notable signature on the opposite side was the veteran Jerry Tillery, who can play the defensive tackle or the end.
The chiefs will choose 31st in total during the opening evening, then choose three times the following night, due to an additional third round selection that they recovered in Tennessee. They have eight choices in all, thanks to a pair of compensatory selections.
Needs
The chiefs have an emerging star in the rusher of George Karlaftis passes, they re-signed Charles Omenihu and they still hope for the first round choice in 2023 Felix Anudike-Uzomah. But the chiefs still need help after the QB, and this is particularly true inside the defensive line, which makes Tackle one of their priorities.
No need
For the first time for some time, chiefs may not be desperate to add a wide receiver. They have Rashee Rice who returns from a knee injury, Xavier Worthy who comes out of a recruited season in small groups, and they re-signed Marquise Brown and Juju Smith-Schuster to provide a veteran presence. If anything, they could add depth in the last laps.
What about the offensive line?
Moore and the veteran Jawaan Taylor are the offensive starting plated before the camp, but either long -term solutions either. The chiefs tried to consolidate the position last year, but the choice of second round Kingsley suamataia could go to the guard.
And second?
The chiefs have signed Nick Bolton to a long -term contract, which means that a group of veteran seconds returns intact. Drue Tranquil is reliable and Leo Chenal has proven that he could manage a large workload, so the chiefs appear in this position.
Long -term
Travis Kelce enters his 13th season, and although they have signed Noah Gray for a long -term agreement and Jared Wiley has potential, they could look for another tight end that they could develop this season.
In the rear field, the chiefs signed Elijah Mitchell and brought Kareem Hunt back to play alongside Isiah Pacheco. But the three runners have limits and none is under contract beyond this season.
