The Memphis Showboats have a new coach and a new general manager.
Ken Whisenhunt has been named coach of the UFL Showboats, the league announced Monday. Jim Monos has been named general manager.
Whisenhunt replaces John DeFilippo, who finished 2-8 in his lone season as coach. Memphis finished second to last in the UFL, starting the season with a win before losing eight straight.
He has extensive coaching experience, having coached the Arizona Cardinals and Tennessee Titans. He helped the Cardinals reach the Super Bowl in 2009.
Monos replaces Dennis Polian, who stepped down as general manager this summer. He has NFL experience, most recently working for the XFL and AAF spring football leagues.
“We are very excited to welcome Ken Whisenhunt and Jim Monos to the UFL family,” Daryl Johnston, UFL executive vice president of football operations, said in a press release. “Jim was part of the personnel department of the New Orleans Saints when they won Super Bowl XLIV and Ken was the offensive coordinator for Pittsburgh when they won Super Bowl XL and, as head coach, was 35 seconds away from leading the Arizona Cardinals to a championship against the Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII. The Showboats have two foundational pieces in place as they prepare for UFL Season 2.”
The UFL is the result of the merger of the XFL and USFL. The Showboats, formerly a USFL team, play their home games at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium. The second season of the UFL is scheduled to begin on March 28, 2025.
