KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – The Kansas City Chiefs have opened the 21-day practice window for the return of fifth-year running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire.
The LSU product that Kansas City drafted in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft has been on the non-football illness list since September 2. He was designated to return from the NFI list on Tuesday.
With Edwards-Helaire on the NFI list and running back Isiah Pacheco suffering a fractured fibula in Week 2, Kansas City used undrafted rookie Carson Steele and veteran running backs Samaje Perine and Kareem Hunt to fill the void.
On Monday, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke positively about Edwards-Helaire, who remained with the team despite his absence from the football field.
“We’re really happy to have him here,” Reid said Monday.

Edwards-Helaire missed several practices during training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, this summer due to what the Chiefs described as an illness. Edwards-Helaire told reporters in early August he was in the midst of an ongoing battle with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) that stemmed from a December 2018 incident in which he and LSU teammate Jared Small were victims of an attempted robbery at Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
The man who attempted to rob Edwards-Helaire and his teammates, Kobe Johnson, was shot and died at the scene.
The 25-year-old from Baton Rouge, Louisiana has 1,845 rushing yards in 48 career games.
He could return to the active roster as soon as Sunday for Kansas City’s Super Bowl LIV and LVIII rematch against the San Francisco 49ers.
