The Denver Broncos made some roster changes Tuesday, letting go of two players who were part of the most recent 53-man roster.
The Broncos cut linebacker Kristian Welch and safety Tanner McAlister. Both players will likely be candidates for a return to the practice squad, provided they clear waivers, especially in McAlister’s case.
McAlister was elevated to the main roster for Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers as JL Skinner and Keidron Smith were on the inactive list.
Welch’s dismissal comes as a bit of a surprise. The Broncos claimed him off waivers when he was released by the Green Bay Packers after 53-man rosters were initially established before the start of the season. He had played in all six games for the Broncos so far this season, making just one start. He collected eight tackles.
#Broncos released ILB Kristian Welch and waived S Tanner McCalister, according to the wire.
Two 53-man spots available with RT Mike McGlinchey, OLB Baron Browning and CB Damarri Mathis all on IR but practicing.

The only healthy inside linebackers currently on the roster are Cody Barton, Justin Strnad and Levelle Bailey. These moves seem to suggest that the Broncos will fill spots on the main roster with players coming off injured reserve.
The Broncos have three players expected to return from injured reserve
Edge rusher Baron Browning and right tackle Mike McGlinchey were designated to return from IR. McGlinchey’s return should help a struggling offensive line and Browning can contribute to a pass rush that is improving week by week. Additionally, defensive back Damarri Mathis, who has yet to play this season, is also eligible to go off IR.
Look for McAlister and Welch to return to the practice squad unless another team claims them. That would force the team to release two players from the practice squad to make room.
Monday, the Broncos re-signed undrafted free agent Quinton Newsome to the practice squad. Wide receiver Kaden Davis was released in a corresponding move.
