THE New York Giants were defeated by the Philadelphia Eagles, 28-3, Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
The defeat was terrible from start to finish. The Giants couldn’t get anything going all game and were embarrassed by their division rivals. New York now has a 2-5 record and an 0-3 conference record, making playoff hopes slim at best.
Here’s a quick look at what we saw during the game and how we rated the Giants in this loss.
Offense: F
This seems like a broken record, but the offensive line issues need to be addressed for the offense to be successful.
With Andrew Thomas out for the season, the offense looked completely dysfunctional. Daniel Jones was sacked seven times and Drew Lock once in a total of 37 dropbacks.
This resulted in a net total of just 43 passing yards on the day. Due to the offensive line, the running game was also horrible, totaling only 76 yards.
The offense needs a serious talent overhaul and it looks like it will take several seasons to get there at this rate.
Defense: C-
The defense was up and down Sunday but was hampered by an ineffective offense.
Dexter Lawrence practically lived in the backfield as he totaled 2.0 sacks and two tackles for loss. The entire pass rush was generally effective as they hit Philadelphia’s quarterbacks seven times and sacked them five times.
However, outside of the pass rush, the defense needs some serious work. Once again, big plays destroyed this unit as the Eagles recorded several runs of 30+ yards and a 41-yard touchdown pass.
The secondary play as a whole was uninspiring as it seemed like Deonte Banks was going at half speed and Nick McCloud just couldn’t keep up with AJ Brown.
This defense clearly has a lot of potential and is probably just a few plays away from being one of the best in the NFL. For now, with all the injuries and a terrible offense, we can expect a lot of points to be put up against Big Blue.
Special teams: C-
The special teams unit as a whole was slightly below average on Sunday.
Greg Joseph made his only field goal attempt and Matthew Haack made four punts inside the 20. However, punt return coverage was porous as Cooper DeJean was able to rebound a punt return of 28 yards.
As for New York’s return game, Ihmir Smith-Marsette returned five punts for a modest 35 yards and had a fumble (out of bounds).
Framing: D
Brian Daboll faced a tough challenge Sunday, one he didn’t expect to win. Nonetheless, the performance the Giants put up in Week 7 was unacceptable, as fewer than 120 total yards and just three total scores were among the worst results of any team in the NFL this season.
The Giants finished 3-14 on third down and it’s clear that Daboll’s play on third down needs to improve. They had success early in the season by targeting Malik Nabers in big spots, but on Sunday even that didn’t work.
On the other side of the ball, Shane Bowen faced the same issues he has had all season. He called it an incredible game in terms of pressure on the quarterback, which caused many Eagles drives to stop sooner than expected. But that defense was unable to stop big plays, leading to former Giants running back Saquon Barkley totaling 187 yards from scrimmage on just 19 touches in his return to MetLife Stadium.
