The Baltimore Ravens made a notable move a week before the trade deadline by acquiring former Carolina Panthers wide receiver Diontae Johnson. Still looking to acclimate, he played just 17 offensive snaps and was not targeted in his Ravens debut in the Week 9 win over the Denver Broncos.
Regardless of what the stats say, the trade could soon pay major dividends for Johnson, something Panthers general manager Dan Morgan recently discussed.
“Obviously, I will keep the conversations that myself, coach Canales and Brandt (Tilis) had private,” Morgan said of the Johnson trade, according to the team’s website. “But we felt that ultimately it was best for the team and for Diontae that we both parted ways and got the compensation that we received. So, ultimately, I thought that it was better. “He wanted both sides to do that. He wanted a change of scenery, and we also wanted to do things of our own. I think ultimately it’s best for both parties to go their separate ways. “
The receiver trades didn’t stop for Carolina after sending Johnson to Baltimore. The Panthers also dealt Jonathan Mingo to the Dallas Cowboys in a deal that perplexed many fans around the league. It’s clear the Panthers are already looking ahead to next season.
As for Johnson, he is now in a position to aim for a Super Bowl with the team he once called his rival. A former professional player who spent the first five years of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers following their selection in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Johnson had 30 catches for 357 yards and three touchdowns with the Panthers this season before arrive. in Baltimore.
He’ll look to increase that number when the Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals kick off Week 10 on Thursday Night Football from M&T Bank Stadium at 8:15 p.m. ET.
